I have read everything by Hepworth, and I really enjoy her writing and find her writing so compelling。 This is no different。 I devoured this book。 However, it's messy。 It's one of those books that if you just go along for the ride, it's good。 But if you analyze it, it's problematic。 Why do I feel let down by this book? Research and the writing of the plot。 The main character Fern is on the autism spectrum although it's specifically not said (much like the character Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory I have read everything by Hepworth, and I really enjoy her writing and find her writing so compelling。 This is no different。 I devoured this book。 However, it's messy。 It's one of those books that if you just go along for the ride, it's good。 But if you analyze it, it's problematic。 Why do I feel let down by this book? Research and the writing of the plot。 The main character Fern is on the autism spectrum although it's specifically not said (much like the character Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory); however, I listened to a podcast interviewer with the author, and Hepworth said Fern was on the spectrum。 Either the author didn't research the autism spectrum enough, or she took creative license (too much, in my opinion) about Fern's specific form of autism。 Fern and her twin sister Rose live in the same town, and, despite being married, Rose takes care of Fern like a big sister would。 Fern is a fairly high-functioning woman on the autism spectrum。 She has a job in a library although she refuses to do part of her job (tech help)。 We learn Fern as a child had killed another child by holding him underwater when we are in her sister Rose's POV。 And their mother was abusive。 When Rose reveals she is having a tough time getting pregnant, Fern takes it upon herself to have a baby for her sister。 She meets a man at the library who looks like Where's Waldo (Wally in Australia, where the book takes place)。 So she calls him Wally despite his actual name being Rocco, and she hatches a plan to get pregnant by him。 This actually becomes a thriller, but I don't want to give away too much of the plot。So we get to my problems with this book, again most of which are due to research/character authenticity inconsistencies/problems:* When we are in the sister Rose's perspective, once she says Fern has an "intellectual" disability, and once she calls her an imbecile。 While some people on the spectrum do have some intellectual impairments, Fern is obviously not one of them。 As a twin, wouldn't you understand the disability better than this, or is this purely from that character's perspective on how she views her sister? If it's the latter, I'm more forgiving。 * Like many people on the spectrum, Fern gets sensory overload very quickly。 She works at the library, and often there is story time or some event going on, and the author doesn't say she struggles during these events。 At the end of the book, she does。 It feels inconsistent。 * I know it's a plot device, but Fern thinks she is absent-minded in an early scene。 It doesn't come up again until the very end。 One feature that I would say people on the spectrum DON'T experience is absent-mindedness。 In my experience, if something outside their routine is going to happen, they will obsess about it。 It didn't ring true as a characteristic, and it's basically only talked about once。 Fern has enough self-awareness to know if this exists。 * Another problem with the portrayal of someone on the spectrum is that Fern seems so easily swayed, which to me doesn't seem like an accurate portrayal。 Again, being on the spectrum isn't an intellectual disability for Fern。 It feels like the book is doing the character a complete dis-service, but again I know it's for the plot。 Still, it bugs me。 * Plot。 I'm not sure Hepworth has a lot of thrillers under her belt。 I actually think this might be one her first "thrillers。" But a lot of character things that become plot points are only mentioned once。 I would say Rose's story/POV is the more seamless one。 Fern's story, which is most of the book, has these awkward plot points (like the absent-mindedness) that are one-note as a plot device and not very fleshed out。 It's still a compelling read, but it doesn't come together like her other books have。 I think it's because of that character authenticity problem。 I'd really like to know what those who are on the spectrum think of this book。 If they think it's an accurate portrayal or they really don't care if it's an accurate portrayal, then disregard my review。 。。。more

It was never a given as to which sister was going to win out and even at the end the conniving and manipulation continues。 The story is told from two points of view, that of Fern in the present, flashbacks, and extracts from Rose's journal。 Fern is a delightful character and I found myself rooting for her, even knowing what she had done as a teenager。 And I loved Rocco 'Wally' Ryan and Rose's reaction to him。 The Good Sister is a blend of genres。 It is a suspenseful psychological thriller with a touching love story lurking beneath。 Enchanting and compelling。 Well done Sally Hepworth。 I can't wait to see what you deliver us next。⭐⭐⭐⭐。3#NetGalley #sallyhepworth #stmartinspress @SallyHepworth @StMartinsPress #australianfiction #contemporaryfiction #familydrama #psychologicalthriller #romance THE AUTHOR: Drawing on the good, the bad and the downright odd of human behaviour, Sally writes incisively about family, relationships and identity。 Her domestic thriller novels are laced with quirky humour, sass and a darkly charming tone。 Sally's novels are available worldwide in English and have been translated into 20 languages。Sally lives in Melbourne, Australia with her husband and three children。 DISCLOSURE: Thank you to St Martin's Press via Netgalley for providing a digital ARC of The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth for review。 All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions。 For an explanation of my rating system please refer to my Goodreads。com profile page or the about page on sandysbookaday。wordpress。com This review and others are also published on Twitter, Amazon, Instagram and my webpage 。。。more

Thank you to St。 Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the ARC of this ebook! This book follows Fern and Rose, who are twin sisters。 Fern has Autism and Rose is very protective of her throughout her childhood and adulthood。 I don’t want to give too much away, but this domestic thriller is about the lengths one sister ultimately goes to to get what she wants, while being a destructive tornado in the process。 Jealousy, low self esteem and narcissism take control for a wild ride throughout the book。 As a Thank you to St。 Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the ARC of this ebook! This book follows Fern and Rose, who are twin sisters。 Fern has Autism and Rose is very protective of her throughout her childhood and adulthood。 I don’t want to give too much away, but this domestic thriller is about the lengths one sister ultimately goes to to get what she wants, while being a destructive tornado in the process。 Jealousy, low self esteem and narcissism take control for a wild ride throughout the book。 As a parent of a child with Autism, I really understood and sympathized with Fern’s character and her struggles, some of which my family also deal with on a daily basis。 I felt her character was well developed and Autism was well understood/researched to portray her character。 I think that says a lot coming from me, as sometimes I pass on books that can hit too close to home。 I really applaud Sally Hepworth as an author for her book, research on Autism, and the awareness that she is helping to spread by writing a character with this narrative。 The book has twists and turns that kept me engaged and wanting to know what was going to happen next。 If you like domestic, psychological thrillers, I highly recommend reading this。 Having read and enjoyed “The Mother In Law” by Sally Hepworth, I was excited to read this book as well and it did not disappoint。 。。。more
